Learn to swim with our adult swimming lessons in Sydney!

Join one of Sydney's leading adult swimming schools with Sydney Community College. Learn to swim with adults of a similar ability as you gain confidence, improve your swimming style, and enjoy being in the water.

With a focus on small groups and skill development, our adults learn to swim lessons cater to various levels of competency, from those who are unfamiliar with water and cannot swim freestyle at all, to those who have had some swimming experience and want to improve.

Learning outcomes

By the end of these swimming lessons, you should have:

  • Gained confidence in the water
  • Become familiar and comfortable in deep water
  • Learned to swim freestyle in shallow and deep water for short distances
  • Learned and practised safety strategies - floating and treading water

After you finish these swimming lessons, you may wish to develop your strokes with Swimming Lessons: Stroke Development.

Course content

What will be covered in this swimming course?

  • Moving through the water using a kickboard
  • Learning and practicing breathing techniques
  • Arm techniques, incorporating stroke with kicking and breathing
  • Floating on the back (assisted)
  • Swimming 20 meters freestyle
  • Swimming freestyle with breathing, increasing distance with rests
  • Increasing distance freestyle without rests - treading water
  • Swimming in deeper water (1.5 to 2.0 metres) - familiarisation and practice

This course is for beginners or individuals with some swimming experience.

Additional information

Please note the following:

  • Participants must be 18 years or over.
  • The course fee does not include the cost of the pool entry
  • All sport and fitness classes are active, and therefore you must bring to the attention of the tutor any physical or health-related impairment that may affect your safety.
  • For all short courses involving physical activity, you must arrive before the published course commencement time, or the tutor may refuse to admit you into the session. The schedule for many short courses involving physical activity starts with an OH&S briefing and a warm-up; to miss either may create a hazard to you, which might exclude you from participation in the session.
