This introductory welding course is designed for beginners who want to develop fundamental welding skills in a safe and structured environment. Through hands-on demonstrations and guided practice, participants will learn the essential techniques of MIG, TIG, Stick, and Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW). By the end of the course, students will have the confidence to operate welding equipment safely, troubleshoot common issues, and apply their skills to practical projects.

Course content

What will be covered in this welding workshop? 

Introduction to Welding

  • Definition and purpose of welding
  • Introduction to welding processes: MIG (Metal Inert Gas), Stick Welding and Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW)
  • Applications of Welding in various industries (automotive, construction, manufacturing).
  • Show examples of welded products (frameworks, repair work).

Safety Practices

  • Learn about essential PPE
  • Demonstration: appropriate PPE (helmet, gloves, boots, jacket)
  • Understand key welding safety guidelines, including fire prevention and ventilation
  • Practical Exercise: Identifying safety hazards in a simulated workspace environment

Welding Equipment and Materials

  • Hands-on demonstration: Setting up a MIG welding machine, including gas connections and settings
  • Learn about essential tools such as chipping hammers, wire brushes, and welding clamps
  • Identify different welding materials (steel, aluminum) and their properties.
  • Practical Exercise: Participants identify materials suitable for welding.

Basic Welding Techniques

  • Hands-on demonstration in MIG welding techniques, including bead creation, speed, and angle control
  • Group activity: Participants can create a simple project plan such as a small frame or joint

Troubleshooting and Best Practices

  • Identify common welding defects such as porosity, undercut, and excessive spatter and their causes
  • Learn best practices for maintaining equipment and improving weld quality.
  • Engage in a practical discussion where participants can share personal experiences or challenges

Beginners who have little to no prior experience in welding but are eager to learn the fundamental techniques and safety practices.

Course materials

Materials Provided:

  • Course handouts including a welding safety checklist, equipment setup guides, and basic welding techniques.
  • Video links for further exploration of each welding process.
  • Access to an online forum for participants to discuss experiences and post questions after the course.

The Bower has PPE sanitised and available to borrow. Students must sanitise before and after use.

Please note the following:

  • Please don't wear your best clothing
  • If you have long hair, please tie it back
  • Wear closed-in shoes, no heels, please
  • Please do not wear jewellery
