Learn to use glass creatively and make a one-of-a-kind contemporary glass platter and a decorative object with our handcrafts courses in Sydney!

In this glass art course, you will be introduced to the world of contemporary kiln-fired glass. You will learn how to design and create your own stunning glass platters and decorative objects to give as gifts, to sell at the markets or to have as a centrepiece in your home. 

Discover your creative potential as you learn the skills required to produce quality glass art in a professional studio setting. You will be encouraged to cultivate your own ideas whilst learning a range of simple but effective techniques to ensure your creations are of the highest quality.

An internationally renowned artist will share her extensive skills and knowledge to have you produce your own designs in glass, which you will be proud to display. You will go home with at least two to three finished pieces and a wide array of new skills to take further if desired.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this glass art class, you should have learned:

  • A sound understanding of glass cutting and assemblage
  • The techniques and artistic methods require to create kiln-formed objects in glass
  • The general principles of kiln use and firing schedules
  • Knowledge of correct safety procedures

Intended audience

Who is this glass art course for?

This course is designed for complete beginners and students with some experience.

Course venue

Studio 4, 4/2 Bolton Street, Sydenham

The class is held in Kate's own studio, just across the road from the Sydenham train station. There's plenty of on-street parking available.

There is all-day street parking available outside the complex. There are two visitor parks inside the warehouse complex which are clearly marked as such and may be used on a ‘first served’ basis if available.
We ask that students kindly DO NOT park in any of the other parking spaces in the complex, including those outside No 4, as they are all in private use by other tenants.

Class materials

Materials provided

All materials are included in the course, including a mix of art glass pieces in a range of colours to create the day's projects.

Over the day, you will create three pieces:

  • two smaller platters (approx 15 x 15 cm each) in the morning, and 
  • a larger project in the afternoon of various shapes and sizes but approx. 28 x 28 cm

Materials for this course include:

  • glass
  • All tools (glass cutters, pliers etc)
  • All moulds
  • All safety equipment (safety glasses, masks etc)
  • Artistic materials such as rulers, glass frits, glass glue etc

Please bring to class

  • Covered shoes
  • Old clothes and/or apron
  • Hair ties if required
  • Pens and pencils
  • Notebook
  • Packed lunch (fridge and microwave available - tea and coffee provided)

Students are encouraged to bring along their own ideas in the form of inspirational photos, magazine clippings, journal drawings and notes etc.
