Joanne Morton
I worked for 12 years in the fashion industry as a Production Manager for some well known women’s wear brands. In 2010 I decided to make a break from the fast pace of the industry and completed a Bachelor of Social Science and moved into the field of community development. Since then I have worked in Australia and Indonesia for small community organisations.
Since returning to Sydney in early 2014 I have been very fortunate to mix my fashion experience with community development. I work five days a week as the Sewing Teacher for The Social Outfit. It is a social enterprise that offers employment and education to those from refugee and new migrant communities. I offer classes in sewing using industrial sewing machines, laying up fabric and cutting, using commercial patterns, and patternmaking and modifications.
My job is extremely rewarding. I love coming to work each day and spending time with my students and colleagues.
