Sydney Community College Working with Children Safety Policy
Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to ensure that Sydney Community College provides a safe and supportive environment for all children and young people who engage with our programs, courses, and activities. The policy outlines our commitment to child safety, the procedures for safeguarding children, and the responsibilities of all staff, volunteers, and contractors.
Scope
This policy applies to all staff, volunteers, Board members, and contractors working at or with Sydney Community College. It also applies to any individuals who interact with children and young people as part of our programs or activities, either on or off our premises.
Policy Statement
Sydney Community College is committed to the safety, welfare, and well-being of all children and young people who participate in our courses and activities. We have a zero-tolerance approach to child abuse and are committed to ensuring that children are protected from harm. We will work to create an environment where children are respected, valued, and heard.
Key Principles
- Best Interests of the Child: The welfare and best interests of the child are paramount and will guide all decisions and actions.
- Zero Tolerance for Child Abuse: Sydney Community College has a zero-tolerance approach to child abuse and any form of harm.

Responsibilities
Board of Directors: The Board of Directors is responsible for the oversight of this policy and ensuring that the College meets its legal and ethical obligations in relation to child safety.
Principal and Management Team: The Principal and management team are responsible for implementing this policy, including ensuring all staff, volunteers, and contractors are aware of their obligations and receive appropriate training.
Staff, Volunteers, and Contractors: All individuals working with or for Sydney Community College must comply with this policy and undertake necessary child safety training. They are required to hold a valid Working with Children Check (WWCC) and must report any concerns or suspicions of child abuse or harm.
Working with Children Check (WWCC)
All staff, volunteers, and contractors engaged by Sydney Community College who work with or are in direct contact with children and young people must hold a current Working with Children Check. This check must be verified by the College before the individual commences any work involving children.
Reporting and Responding to Concerns
Mandatory Reporting: Any staff member, volunteer, or contractor who suspects that a child is at risk of harm or has been harmed must report their concerns to the Principal or designated Child Safety Officer. All concerns will be handled in accordance with relevant legislation and College procedures.
Confidentiality: All reports of suspected abuse will be treated with confidentiality and sensitivity. Information will only be shared with those directly involved in the investigation and in accordance with legal requirements.
Support for Affected Individuals: Sydney Community College will provide appropriate support to any child or young person affected by abuse, including referral to external agencies where necessary.
Training and Education
Sydney Community College is committed to educating its staff, volunteers, and contractors on child safety practices and the identification of potential risks to children. Regular training will be provided to ensure that everyone is aware of their responsibilities and the procedures for safeguarding children.
Review of Policy
This policy will be reviewed annually by the Board of Directors to ensure it remains effective, relevant, and compliant with any legislative changes. Feedback from staff, volunteers, and other stakeholders will be considered in the review process.
