Learn Urban Photography with a Photography Tutor, with 50 years of Photography experience including 10 years of Tutoring experience.
Urban Photography is the emerging art of capturing; subjects, still or with movement, on the street or in transit / transport, these photographs can be with or without people, within those surroundings.
Sydney CBD being a much denser / built up environment, is a magnificent setting, offering numerous visual and moving, opportunities which makes it one of the most popular environments to do Urban Photography in Australia.
This field trip includes time (up to an hour) for a coffee / snack / comfort break, some feedback time, and some 1 to 1 help with your camera.
This field trip has a maximum of 6 participants, for a greater learning experience, and more one-to-one time with the Tutor.
By the end of this field trip you should be able to:
Set up for, and do Urban Photography;
You will learn:
- How to set up, and expose to photograph; in both colour and black and white photographs out of camera, with your Optical DSLR camera / Mirrorless camera / Advanced adjustable Compact camera, (please *Special Digital Compact Camera note).
- How using monochrome / black and white - light and shadow, can add drama, to make a striking photograph, or set a softer tone. How can colour can make really make a mood, or invoke an emotion.
- Focusing; Focus Points, focus drive single photograph, focus drive continuous photography, and motordrive setup.
- About Light; Direction of light, quality of light, soft and hard light.
- What POV Point of View is, and to make the most of our light, to enable your Composition including; Framing and Negative space.
- How to capture Photographs in an Urban environment including:
- Capturing the moment, and or tell a story through; TIMING - Timing is everything, but how we combine Timing with the subject - knowing ‘The Decisive Moment’.
- That speed isn’t everything; using slower shutter speeds to your artistic advantage, how a Single Photograph, can be the true mastery of Capturing the Moment, and in many instances / opportunities can actually capture the actual moment better than a sequence.
- About the Action Peak - Freezing the Moment, and Understanding the difference between using a motor drive and taking a single photograph at a time.
- Sequence Photography – Is a great way to capture fast moving action - that is faster than the eye can see, knowing when to Use your motor drive, to capture a series of photographs that can make up a sequence, and how to make your sequences really matter.
- How to “See Beyond” also known as pre-visualisation, how to really make a Photograph that you desire.
Intended audience
Who is this field trip for?
This field trip is suitable for students whom have a thorough working knowledge of their camera and controls, shutter and aperture settings, and or have completed either a;
- Beginner’s Photography Course, Introduction to Photography or similar.
- Basic DSLR Camera / Digital Photography Course or similar.
- Intermediate Photography Course or similar.
Course venue
Meet the Tutor at 10 am on the Metro Central platform 1, (which is a dual platform - 1 and 2 are the same platform) at the base of the main escalators, we will begin and from there we go to each Metro railway station, on and off the Metro line, then through the Sydney CBD Martin Place to the Strand, and then back to Martin Place on the Metro through to Barangaroo.

- Central station Metro Platform 1
- Gadigal and surrounds
- Martin Place and surrounds
- Sydney CBD
- Barangaroo and surrounds
Field Trip materials
What to bring to the field trip:
Camera Equipment:
- Any adjustable digital camera; DSLR / 4/3rds / Mirrorless / Advanced Compact with;
- RAW / JPEG image capability
- adjustable ISO/film speed settings
- adjustable exposure settings; shutter, aperture, and manual exposure i.e. S or TV, A or AV, and M
- Also if your camera has adjustable *picture control / picture style settings; i.e. monochrome standard, neutral etc / film simulations; i.e. negative, chrome etc (*this is not essential but a great way to get great straight out of camera photographs (SOOC)
For each camera(s) that you bring please ensure you have;
- Batterie(s) charged and ready x 2
- Memory card(s) x 2 if you have them
Lens(es)
- A lens from wide to standard focal length lens, is highly recommend for Urban Photography
PRIME lenses: 24 mm, 28mm, 28 mm, 35 mm, 50 mm - Other PRIME (fixed focal length lens(es) i.e. super wide and telephoto; 15mm, 20 mm, 85mm, up to 135mm
- Recommended ZOOM Lenses, that include the include the above focal lengths: 8 – 55 mm, 18 – 135 mm, 16 – 35mm, 24 – 70mm , 28 to 80 mm, 10 – 20mm etc
* Special Digital Compact Camera note;
Any adjustable Advanced Compact with a fixed, or zoom lens is great for Urban Photography, as long as you can make some adjustments to the camera; focusing, shutter speeds, apertures etc, and can exponentially extend your Photography possibilities ‘by not being too noticeable’.
What to wear:
Please dress sensibly for the weather; please bring a rain jacket / rain outer shell. Closed in footwear ONLY for your safety, acceptable; grippy rubber soled; walking / running / weatherproof runners etc.
Additional items to bring:
Opal card / cash / card for coffee, food and any other expenses, water, snacks, small umbrella (no large umbrellas), any safety items (personal preference) hand sanitiser, face mask etc.
