Learn to play tennis for beginners with our sport courses in Sydney.
Each class is 2 hours in duration. Pupils are coached with other pupils of a similar skill level and assigned their own dedicated tennis professional and court. If you want to learn or improve your game then these classes are perfect for you.
With highly-qualified, home-grown and overseas teaching professionals on duty, you will be challenged in the latest on-court techniques, drills and approaches from around the world.
Course content
What will be covered in this Tennis Course for Beginners?
- Participate and practice in group-based tennis drills, games and technique changes.
- Learn & practice the correct grips & techniques for the forehand, backhand, serve & volley.
- Be introduced to the ready position, backswing, swing to the ball, contact, follow-through and recovery.
- Rally the ball backwards and forwards over the net with other players.
- Develop footwork, movement and recovery on the court for all strokes.
- Learn the scoring system, rules of tennis and how to put these together to play a proper scoring game.
During your course, the intention is that the above topics will be covered but not necessarily in the order given. Due to the flexible nature of Adult classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.

These lessons are for adults who have minimal coaching and playing experience and are wanting to improve their fitness & learn the fundamentals.

Course materials
What to bring to class
- Your own racquet if you have one, or use one of our school's racquets for free. New tennis racquets are always available at our venues for purchase at affordable prices.
- Comfortable clothing of any colour and sports or running shoes. If you need to change clothes the coaches on duty will direct you where you can do so. You can bring your bag onto the court.
- A water bottle
- A hat for day time classes
Additional information
Please note the following:
- If you are worried the weather may cancel the class from going ahead, be aware that if it is cancelled you will receive an SMS at least an hour before. If you don't receive that SMS, then your class will be going ahead. Classes washed out will be made up on the same day and time a week later, subject to availability.
- Attendance must be across consecutive weeks on the same day and session time each week. Once a booking has been confirmed, no-shows or cancellations void the class and no rescheduling is allowed.
- Class sizes range from four to six pupils.
- Please arrive at least 10 minutes before your class start time if you are visiting us for the first time. If you have visited us before get there 5 minutes prior.
- For all courses involving physical activity you must arrive by the published course commencement time or the instructor may refuse to admit you into the session. The agenda for many courses involving physical activity starts with an OH&S briefing and/or a warm-up and to miss either may create a hazard to you, which might exclude you from participation in the session.
