This course is delivered under the Adult and Community Education Program and is subsidised by the NSW Government.

Sydney Community College has partnered with Gadhungal Marring, a First Nations organisation from the South Coast of NSW, to deliver an innovative and culturally centred digital literacy program called the Digital Walkabout. This unique initiative supports First Nations participants blending vocational learning with cultural education to create a powerful and engaging learning experience. What sets the Digital Walkabout apart is its focus on First Nations culture, making it a one-of-a-kind program. By putting culture at the forefront, the program not only equips participants with digital skills but also enhances their confidence, self-worth, and sense of belonging. This holistic approach ensures a culturally safe and appropriate learning environment that keeps participants engaged over a 10-day period.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this course, participants must be a person of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent who identifies as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and is accepted as such by the community in which they live.

This course is for First Nations learners from metropolitan and regional communities who require upskilling to progress closer to employment while reconnecting with their cultural heritage.

Learning outcomes

Upon completing the Digital Walkabout, participants achieve nationally accredited vocational units of competencies, including:

1. BSBTEC101 - Operate digital devices
2. BSBTEC203 - Research using the internet
3. BSBPEF101 - Plan and prepare for work readiness
4. BSBPEF302 - Develop self-awareness

Students will also enhance their cultural knowledge, personal development, and readiness for employment.

Course content

What will be covered in this Digital Walkabout Course?

The first week of the course, developed by the founder and CEO of Gadhungal Marring Raymond Timbery, is truly exceptional. Known as Cultural Revitalisation, this immersive experience reconnects participants with their ancestors and deepens their cultural knowledge through five fundamental pillars:

1. Welcoming to the Ways of Our Ancestors
2. My Story, Your Story, Our Story
3. Interconnectedness of Everything
4. Traditional Practices | Roles & Responsibilities
5. Leadership in Culture

During the second week, participants transition into digital literacy training, where they develop essential digital skills alongside self-awareness and job readiness skills. This phase is anchored by the ‘Voices of Culture’ project, which spans five days and allows participants to work in small groups to create and deliver their own cultural workshops.
